Phomopsin Intake Reduces Wool Growth in Mated Ewes

چکیده
In Western Australia large areas of lupins are grown, and the stubbles of these crops provide valuable summer grazing for sheep in the absence of lupinosis. Lupinosis is a mycotoxicosis resulting from the ingestion of phomopsins (Culvenor et al. 1977), toxins produced on lupin stubbles by the fungus Phomopsis leptostromiformis (van Wannelo et al. 1970). It is often a fatal disease, but apart from loss of live weight, production losses associated with milder forms of lupinosis have not been quantified. The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effects of phomopsin intake on wool growth of ewes.

The Effects of Lupinosis on Wool Growth of Ewes
Wool grown by ewes with chronic lupinosis, induced by injections of phomopsins, was compared to that grown by control ewes and by ewes pair-fed to the feed intake of the phomopsin-treated ewes, during and after the period of phomopsin administration. Wool growth was not different between the groups during treatment. Fibre diameter and length of wool grown by the phomopsin-treated ewes were redu...

The hypothesis that infrequent feeding of sheep supports a higher rate of wool growth than frequent (daily) feeding was examined using oats grain and three roughages of varying protein content. The wool growth of Merino ewes fed every third and sixth day was significantly greater than that of similar ewes fed every day, when averaged over the four diets. Increased wool production due to infrequ...

T HE development of the Targhee breed of sheep began in i9=6 when the Bureau of Animal Industry at the U. S. Sheep Experiment Station, Dubois, Idaho mated select Rambouillet rams with select ewes of Corriedale XLincoln-Rambouillet and Lincoln XRambouillet combinations. Descendants of these crosses have been interbred and carefully selected to produce Targhee sheep. Spencer and Stoehr (x94L) hav...
متن کاملThe effect of melatonin treatment on wool growth and thyroxine secretion in sheep
Melatonin implants are commonly used to control sheep reproduction during the winter solstice, but their effect on wool growth is unclear. In this study, wool growth was measured in 17 Assaf (carpet wool), 21 Rasa Aragonesa (medium wool) and 20 Merino (fine wool) ewes after inserting melatonin implants in January, February and April, and 13 ewes were used as control. All ewes were previously ov...
متن کاملThe effects of exogenous melatonin on wool quality and thyroid function in Rasa Aragonesa ewes
The effect of melatonin on wool quality and thyroid function was studied. Ten ewes received a melatonin implant (M) on March 2004, and 10 ewes which were not implanted served as control (C). At monthly intervals over 12 months, f ibre length and growth were calculated, and plasma thyroxine (T4) concentrations were measured. Wool samples (~N = 2000 fibres) were collected and fibre diameter, stan...
